Antisana Volcano

1 Day

Overview

The Antisana Ecological Reserve is one of Ecuador’s most impressive natural areas, located northeast of the Andes near Quito. It is home to the Antisana Volcano , the fourth-highest peak in the country at 5,704 meters above sea level , and an important protected zone due to its rich biodiversity and unique highland ecosystems.

This massive stratovolcano , considered potentially active, is covered by glaciers that have lost nearly 36% of their original mass over the last five decades — making it also a key site for climate change research.

On the way to the volcano, you’ll see an ancient lava river and volcanic rock field from the last eruption recorded in 1820 , some of which was historically used in construction projects in Quito.

A must-stop is the Las Secas Lagoon , a scenic viewpoint where you can spot iconic species like the Andean condor and the giant hummingbird . You’ll also enjoy stunning waterfalls and, depending on the season, nesting sites of condors clinging to the rocky cliffs.

The reserve is renowned for its bird diversity , including endemic hummingbirds like the green thorntail (curiquingue) , and serves as a transition zone between high-altitude paramo and cloud forests.

An ideal destination for eco-tourists, nature photographers, hikers, and travelers looking to explore untouched natural wonders filled with wildlife and breathtaking scenery.
