Quilotoa Lake

1 Day

Overview

Immerse yourself in one of Ecuador’s most breathtaking landscapes with our Quilotoa Lake Tour , a unique journey that blends volcanic beauty, history, and authentic Andean culture.

On the way to the lake, we’ll cross the majestic Ecuadorian paramo , filled with unique highland scenery and indigenous communities that have preserved their ancestral traditions for generations. You’ll see traditional crops, native animals, and experience the warm hospitality of local families.

We’ll arrive at Quilotoa Lake , a green-colored lake located inside a volcanic crater formed around 800 years ago after a massive eruption. As the westernmost volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes, Quilotoa features a 3 km wide caldera with a depth of 250 meters , where gas bubbles still rise from the water today.

Inside the crater, you’ll enjoy a 30-minute descent on foot to reach the lake shore. There, you can take a kayak or boat ride to admire the lake from a different perspective.

Before reaching the lake, we’ll stop in Tigua , famous for its paintings on sheepskin and hand-carved wooden masks. We’ll also visit La Casa del Indio , a traditional home where you’ll learn how local families live in this cold and rainy highland environment.

The return from the lake takes about 1 hour on foot , or you can choose to ride a horse — a popular option due to the steep climb back to the crater rim.

This tour offers a perfect mix of adventure, learning, and connection with nature and culture — a must-do when visiting Ecuador.
